Middlesbrough Market’s Energy Pledge to Traders

The boss of Middlesbrough’s historic indoor market has re-assured Teesside’s hard-working independent traders that they will be protected against the soaring cost of energy.

As fears grow over rising bills, Dundas Indoor Market has pledged to protect and support existing and new tenants.

“All businesses are worried,” said Market Manager David Harris.  “But our small independents are particularly vulnerable.”

Mr Harris has confirmed that his traders will continue to benefit from an all-inclusive deal which means the rent they pay for their unit covers the cost of business rates, broadband as well as energy.

Prices start as low as £75 per week to help new tenants get their businesses up and running through the make-or-break first six months.

Mr Harris’ pledge was made after the town’s popular Base Camp venue in nearby Exchange Square confirmed that it will close later this month because of a steep rise in costs.

The Base Camp team – which provides music and arts, food and drink as well as a regular market – said it was “devastated” at having to make such a difficult decision.

Mr Harris said: “The last few years have been really tough for all retailers.  In Middlesbrough we know only too well what has happened to some of the famous High Street chains.

“The small independent businesses based with us have really had to grit their teeth and get on with it by continuing to offer products you can’t buy anywhere else at affordable prices.”

He added: “I know how difficult it has been for many of them.  They often work on their own and don’t have the support network that exists with a big retailer.  Many of them are fulfilling a lifelong dream to run their own business and that can create real pressure in challenging times like these.  That is why we will continue to support them and why I am more than happy to speak to any independent trader who is interested in joining us.”

Even though the cost of living crisis has been looming for months, the market has seen an influx of new businesses.  Toni’s Gift Boutique, The Protein Café, Bubble ‘n Sweet and Baby Beautiful have all opened.

They have joined well-established businesses such as Alta Ego, Leo Libra Pet Supplies, CAM Family Meats and the longest-running business at the market, Jean’s Kitchen, which opened more than 20 years ago.

It has just been named as one of the five Middlesbrough eateries to be awarded the highest rating for food hygiene and safety.
